benefits of walking, Olotu Funke

Hey everyone! I decided to take my walking routine seriously this month. Before May, I enjoyed walks, but I knew I needed to be more consistent for overall Physical and Mental fitness.  The gym was my usual go-to, with walks being more of a random thing.

I set a goal to close my move rings every day (a fitness tracker feature) and let me tell you, it’s been a journey! There have been days when I haven’t been perfect. Like, you know, when my period decided to show up. My body needed rest, and I listened.

Here are 3 benefits of Walking that I have observed.

  1. It makes me feel relaxed and gives me time to meditate – One of the things I love most about walking is the sense of peace it brings. It’s my alone time to de-stress and even meditate.  Headphones, phone, and essentials – that’s all I need. My mind goes through different phases: sometimes I overthink, sometimes I jam to music and move my body, sometimes podcast, I reflect on memories, and sometimes I simply appreciate nature. It all leads to a feeling of gratitude, lighter and more positive.  Sure, I can think at home, but there’s something special about connecting with nature, a new path, and fresh air – it truly renews my senses.

  1. Confidence Boost – Before my period hit (gotta be real!), I felt fantastic about keeping this walking commitment. It spilled over into other parts of my life. I had a newfound confidence that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Remember how I mentioned in a previous post that keeping promises to yourself is a key to self-confidence? Yeah, that!
  1. Fitness beyond the gym – For a long time, the gym was my only idea of staying fit. I do dabble in yoga, but that’s for my mental. Now that I’ve experienced how walking benefits my physical health, I’m excited to explore other fun fitness activities.  In the short term, I’m thinking about canceling my gym membership and investing in some home workout equipment. Consistency is key, and I feel like this might be a better fit for me right now.

These are just a few of the many benefits I’ve experienced from walking. If you’re a walker, what’s your favorite part about it?  More importantly, what fun activities do you do to stay fit? Share your favorites in the comments, or tell me about something you’re planning to try!

P.S. Check out the vlog linked below – it’s a glimpse into my last walk and some thoughts on my recent social media break. Hope you enjoy it, and see you soon!
