NYSC corper, crying in NYSC camp

NYSC camp was one of the weird things that excited me just like going to boarding school.

I had heard a lot about the camp from waking up by 4 am to standing under the sun for hours with mean army officials and something about the experience and stories made me eager to experience camp.

Maybe I have suffer head enjoyment symptoms? I don’t even know what that means so let’s get to why I cried my first night at NYSC camp.

The day we were to resume camp, I woke up by 6 am because I had to get my health clearance from the hospital and find a good bed spot. I was carrying my box with everything I needed to survive in camp down the stairs and I sprained my ankle. I screamed mahnn. It was so painful.

That was where the issue started, my family members laughed and sympathized with me at the same time. Apparently, my busy body caused it.

We went to the hospital for my health clearance, was delayed but I got it and went to the camp around 3 with my ankle still hurting. A sis got an OK bed space and had to go for clearance immediately. At this point, my ankle was already swelling but did I stop moving up and down? Nope. I was excited about what I could not place my hands on and getting stressed because the system was created to stress you.

After the hours spent documenting and photocopying at high rates. It was time to retreat to the hostel.

We had a meeting with our hostel mistresses, they assured us that they were nice people if we follow the rules of keeping the hostel clean and getting inside on time because we had a curfew of 10 pm.

What will I be doing outside by 10 pm? I will be inside.

So, I cannot remember if it was the same day or the next, but my legs were already swelling, and it was becoming painful to walk. I had to go to the clinic to get it massaged or whatever was right.

My name was among those that were picked to clean up the hostel that day because we had a roaster, but I was in pain and had to go to the clinic.

I was led to the physiotherapist office and when he checked my leg, he told me it was in a bad condition, if I had come later it might have affected how I walked and I am there like really??? you mean, I won’t be able to catwalk like I always do? The ghetto!

It was a serious dislocation of some sort and he urgently requested for ice and all the extras, I was in pain, but I did hard guy. He may tell you otherwise.

I had to stay at the clinic, so I won’t have to go to the field because of my leg, I found a book called Rich dad, poor dad. I started reading it and it was amazing, when it was time for lunch, I went to help myself of course.

My issue started when I went back to the hostel and I found the mistress sitting outside with a mean ass soldier (his name is mosquito because he is small and deadly) she asking people their names before entering the hostel. When I mentioned mine, she asked if I was the Funke that did not sweep today and I started stammering because duh, it was me.

So she instructed the soldier to pack out my things out of the hostel, mind you this was around 7,8 at night and there were 2 girls that did not have bed space, I heard the soldier said they were his “ogas pikin” apparently we were two that defaulted and she made the soldier follow us to our room and we brought our box, I had bandage on my leg, walking was painful and now this? I should be out in the dark with my bags and no place to sleep? I broke down and started crying. I was crying and this woman did not even look like she saw my tears and the bandage on my leg.

After minutes of kneeling to beg with zero compassion on her face, she told us to ask everyone in the hostel to come begging. So, we called everyone to beg her to allow us back and she agreed. I don’t know if I cried because of my leg, because I almost got kicked out or because the girls that came late were being treated specially and almost got my bed space.

Seeing pictures of corpers celebrating that they were passing out made me happy, I was happy for them because they are done with the shitty system but also worried because it is a jungle out there.

Best of luck to everyone
